Chattogram Wasa, the water supply authority in Chattogram, Bangladesh, has unveiled a $400 million project to tackle the salinity issue caused by climate change and provide clean drinking water to residents. The project has garnered interest from international lending agencies such as the Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF) of Korea and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica).
In collaboration with SUEZ, a concept note titled “Chattogram Wasa Improvement Project (CWIP)” has been developed. The plan entails constructing intake stations, pipelines, and new water treatment plants to extract water from the Karnaphuli River. Chattogram typically faces a salinity crisis for 15-20 days annually, but this year it persisted for approximately three months due to low rainfall and reduced water discharge. With an investment of $400 million, the project aims to address rising salinity levels and secure a consistent supply of clean drinking water for the growing population of Chattogram.
