Chevron has commenced drilling Bibiyana-27 well in Bangladesh’s Bibiyana gas field, a significant move for the US oil and gas major. This gas field in the country’s northeast produces about 1,100 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) of natural gas, contributing over half of the total local gas field output. Chevron’s plans include drilling additional wells in the newly acquired ‘flank’ area if Bibiyana-27’s drilling proves successful. The company obtained this area outside its existing contract zone from Petrobangla for exploration. Chevron’s partnership with Petrobangla began in 2004, and Bibiyana field’s estimated reserves have grown from 2.4 Tcf to around 7.0 Tcf. Bangladesh’s gas demand exceeds supply, which is approximately 2,938 mmcfd, creating a challenge for meeting domestic needs.
