Chevron’s Bibiana, Jalalabad, and Moulvibazar gas fields play a crucial role in Bangladesh’s daily gas supply, contributing approximately 41 % to the national grid. However, these fields are nearing the end stage of their estimated reserves. To address this challenge, Chevron has undertaken various renovation activities, including well drilling, aimed at increasing reserves.
Although specific information about reserve increases is not available, Chevron recently reported to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission that gas reserves in its Bangladeshi fields have increased by approximately 481 billion cubic feet (bcf). While the report doesn’t specify the increase in each gas field, there’s a high likelihood of reserve growth, particularly in the Bibiana gas field. Presently, Bibiana gas field extracts 1,015 million cubic feet of gas daily. If reserves expand, this could sustain gas availability for over a year at the current extraction rate. However, the gas field’s tenure ultimately depends on Petrobangla’s demand.
