Chicken prices in Chittagong have experienced a decline ahead of Eid al-Adha. Both broiler and layer chickens, as well as golden and native chickens, have seen a decrease in prices in both wholesale and retail markets. After reaching a record high in March, chicken prices have been steadily decreasing, primarily due to reduced demand for chicken meat during the Qurbani period. In the retail market, broiler chickens are being sold for Tk 180 to Tk 185 per kg, while layer chickens are priced at Tk 340 per kg. Golden chickens are being sold for Tk 240 per kg, and domestic chickens are priced at Tk 590 per kg.
Just a week ago, broiler chicken was being sold at Tk 240 per kg, golden chicken at Tk 380 per kg, and domestic chicken at over Tk 610 per kg. Consequently, there has been a reduction of Tk 60 per kg for broiler chickens, Tk 140 per kg for golden chickens, and Tk 20 per kg for domestic chickens. This decline in prices is attributed to the upcoming Qurbani Eid, resulting in decreased demand for chicken. The reduced purchasing power of consumers, caused by price increases, has also contributed to the decline in demand for chicken meat. The General Secretary of the Feed Industry Association of Bangladesh, anticipates further price decreases next week due to the sacrificial tradition of Eid. Farmers, who are already operating at a loss, have reduced their chicken prices. However, there is a significant price difference between different markets in Chittagong, with Kazi Deuri market having higher prices compared to other locations. The price disparity has led buyers to avoid certain markets, favoring those with lower prices.
