The Chinese authorities have requested that Bangladesh take immediate measures to address 13 types of harmful pests found in Bangladeshi mangoes before exporting them to China. In response to this request, the Bangladesh mission in Beijing has communicated the issue to the relevant government agency for prompt action.
The General Administration of China Customs (GACC) conducted a pest risk analysis (PRA) of mangoes in March 2023 and identified 13 pests that could potentially be imported with mangoes from Bangladesh. These pests pose risks to both agricultural production and human health.
As a result, the Bangladeshi authorities have been urged to implement measures to prevent the importation of these pests. This issue is critical for advancing market access for Bangladeshi mangoes in China, and the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) is working to address the identified pests. Mango exports from Bangladesh have been on the rise, with 2,700 tonnes exported to 34 countries in the current season.
