China’s Belt and Road Initiative Leaves a Lasting Impact in BD

Industry: Development, Logistics

China’s infrastructure presence in Bangladesh has witnessed substantial growth in the past seven years since the country’s participation in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Notably, Chinese enterprises have been involved in various projects, including 27 power and energy initiatives, with more than 50% of Bangladesh’s share. These projects have significantly contributed to the country’s power generation capacity. In terms of transportation, China has constructed a total of 550 kilometers of roads, including the Padma Bridge and the first-ever underwater roadway, the Bangladesh Karnaphuli River Tunnel Project.

Moreover, seven railway lines, totaling 541.9 kilometers, are currently under construction. The collaboration has also extended to municipal services, where Chinese investments have improved water supply and sanitation systems. For instance, the Dasherkandi Sewage Treatment Plant Project, costing Tk3,482 crore, received two-thirds of its funding from China. These developments have resulted in approximately 550,000 job opportunities for Bangladeshis, showcasing the significant impact of China’s infrastructure projects in the country.
