By the end of next month, the oil reserves in the Sylhet-10 well in Tamabil will be determined by the US company Slumberger. A Development Project Proposal (DPP) has been sent for the Sylhet-12 well, intended solely for oil extraction, with plans to collaborate with the Chinese company Sinopac. Approval has also been given to drill the Sylhet-10 X well for both gas and oil extraction. The Sylhet-10 well, drilled since October 2021 at a cost of Tk 202 crore, discovered three layers of gas and one layer of oil, yielding gas at 22-25 million cubic feet per day and crude oil at 35 barrels per hour. In 1986, the first oil field was discovered in Haripur, Sylhet, producing 500 barrels daily before closing. After 37 years, another oil reserve, estimated at 8-10 million barrels, was found in Sylhet. The country’s annual fuel oil demand is around 6.5 million tonnes, mostly imported, costing approximately Tk 11 thousand crore annually.
