The Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) is set to construct six new lighter jetties along the Karnaphuli River to enhance the port’s cargo handling capacity and reduce costs and time for importers. Currently served by five jetties, the addition will increase the total to 11 jetties, though the business community believes this will still fall short of meeting the growing import volume demands. The expansion aims to reduce cargo unloading times by one-third, lowering transportation costs and easing traffic congestion in Chittagong City. The new jetties, located in Laldia Char, are expected to be operational within five to six months. The CPA has finalized agreements with six companies for the operation of these jetties, which include Omera Petroleum Limited, East Coast Trading Pvt Ltd, SS Trading, Shah Cement Industries, GPH Steel, and N Mohammed Trading Corporation. These companies will lease the jetties for ten years, generating approximately Tk40 crore annually for the CPA.
