In recent years, the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) has observed a concerning rise in false declarations on imports, leading to significant financial losses for the public purse. In the fiscal year 2022-2023 alone, CIID intercepted attempts to dodge Tk 2.01 billion in additional duties, a sharp increase from Tk 1.29 billion in the previous year.
The joint Director at the CIID attributes this surge in false declarations to the heightened volume of imports and exports following the COVID-19 pandemic. Statistics reveal a significant increase in cases filed against the false declaration of imported goods: 867 cases were filed in the fiscal year 2021-2022, involving goods worth Tk 3.33 billion. In comparison, 820 cases were filed in the fiscal year 2022-2023, involving goods worth Tk 4.54 billion. In these cases, the amount of declared duties was Tk 2.33 billion and Tk 3.63 billion, respectively, with additional duties realized amounting to Tk 1.29 billion and Tk 2.01 billion.
