City Group, a major conglomerate in Bangladesh and a significant player in the sugar market, has expressed its intention to export sugar amid a surge in the international demand for the sweetener. Although granted approval by the commerce ministry three years ago, City Group seeks an extension of the export deadline until June 30, 2024.

However, the ministry is hesitant due to a local sugar supply shortage, resulting in a 58% price increase over the past year. City Group highlights growing export demand in various regions but faces resistance due to domestic market concerns. The commerce ministry had initially allowed the export of 47,300 tonnes of sugar, with the original deadline set for June 2021. Despite challenges, City Group presses for export opportunities amidst global demand. The retail market currently sees elevated sugar prices, with the government setting a maximum retail price to curb rising trends.
