Efforts to address the fuel crisis at coal-fired power plants in Bangladesh have yielded positive results, with shipments of coal arriving to alleviate the shortage. A recent delivery of 26,620 tonnes of Indonesian coal reached the Mongla Port for the Rampal Thermal Power Plant. The Payra 1,320MW Thermal Power Plant is expecting a coal shipment by June 25, 2023.
Additionally, other coal-based power plants in the trial production stage are preparing to contribute to the grid as their pre-commissioning coal is on its way. Despite improvements in Dhaka, load-shedding continues in other areas, emphasizing the need for a sustained resolution. The temporary closure of the Payra plant, which supplied around 1,200MW per day, has highlighted the coal shortage issue. Efforts are underway to resume production by June 26, and the Rampal Thermal Power Plant is running with its existing stock of approximately 46,000 tonnes of coal. These developments are expected to alleviate the energy situation in Bangladesh.
