The price of coarse rice in Bangladesh has surged, crossing Tk 50 per kilogram after a year, putting additional strain on the purchasing power of low-income individuals already grappling with inflation. At the retail level in Dhaka, coarse rice is now being sold for Tk 51 per kg, up from Tk 50 in November and Tk 49 in October,2023. This represents an average 3% increase in the last month. The finer variety is priced at Tk 68.5 per kg, and the medium grain at Tk 56.5. The rise is attributed to increased prices at the wholesale and mill levels, influenced by costlier paddy due to delays in Aman planting and harvesting, Bangladesh’s second-largest rice crop.
