The Association of Bankers, Bangladesh (ABB) has stated that the banking sector alone cannot effectively tackle the growing issue of non-performing loans (NPLs) in the country. The Chairman of ABB emphasized that addressing defaulted loans has become a significant challenge for the banking sector, requiring concerted efforts from the entire country and society. Chairman noted that relaxed policies implemented in recent years have not yielded the desired outcomes in terms of debt repayment by large borrowers. The ratio of default loans increased to 8.16% of outstanding loans in 2022, up from 7.93% the previous year. The ABB called for the adoption of global best practices to tackle NPLs and emphasized the importance of improving the legal framework and corporate governance in the banking sector. The association acknowledged the need for time, social commitment, increased judicial capacity, and specialized training to effectively address the NPL problem.
