The recent floods and waterlogging in Chattogram have led to a rapid increase in commodity prices at kitchen markets. Traders are reportedly raising prices due to goods shortages following the floods. Broiler chicken prices have risen to Tk 180-190 per kg, while local chicken is now at Tk 550 per kg from Tk 500 previously. Sonali chicken is priced at Tk 320 per kg, up from Tk 280-300 last week. Additionally, fish prices have also escalated by Tk 50-100 per kg, with hilsa reaching Tk 1,200-1,800 per kg and shrimp at Tk 800-1,200. Vegetable prices have surged too, with green chilly now at Tk 500-600 per kg compared to Tk 400-450 before. Cucumber prices have risen to Tk 50-60 per kg from Tk 30-40. Beef is selling at Tk 850-900 per kg. Retailers are flouting price lists, selling items above set rates. Moreover, Indian onion prices have also surged due to shortages caused by recent floods. In wholesale markets, onion prices increased by Tk 15-18 per kg, from Tk 58-65 to Tk 75-78 in retail markets. Waterlogging in business hubs like Khatunganj caused significant import losses, contributing to the price hike of essentials.
