Construction material prices in Bangladesh have dropped slightly due to reduced demand amid economic uncertainty, monsoon floods, and political changes following the fall of the Hasina government. The real estate sector, a major consumer of these materials, has been hit hard, with sales significantly down.
Mild steel (MS) rod prices fell to Tk 87,000-92,000 per tonne from Tk 90,000-95,000 in March, with sluggish sales reported. Cement prices remained stable, with minor fluctuations, but sales have dropped to one-third of normal levels. Prices of clay bricks and concrete blocks also declined, with concrete blocks seeing a 20% price reduction.
The construction sector faces additional challenges as development projects stall, and contractors linked to the previous government disappear. The paint industry is also suffering, with sales down to 20%, pushing some companies toward closure. Contractors are unable to capitalize on the price declines due to halted projects and a lack of new developments amidst ongoing political uncertainty.
