Chattogram port achieved a record in container handling, processing 32.58 lakh TEUs by December 29, 2024, marking a 6.8% increase over last year’s 30.51 lakh TEUs. This was also higher than the previous record of 32.15 lakh TEUs in 2021. Of the total, 17.62 lakh TEUs were imports and 14.97 lakh TEUs were exports. The port is expected to handle an additional 15,000 TEUs by year-end.
This growth follows a slowdown in 2022-2023 due to global crises and domestic challenges. In addition to containers, the port processed 12.31 crore tonnes of cargo, surpassing last year’s 12.02 crore tonnes. The increase reflects improved port efficiency, aided by new equipment and recovery in foreign trade. The port’s progress is seen as crucial for Bangladesh’s recovery, with hopes of securing a higher ranking among the world’s busiest container ports. Container congestion, worsened by political unrest, has since eased.
