Corn imports via the Bhomra port in Satkhira have witnessed a significant decline in the first two months of the 2023-24 fiscal year compared to the same period last year. Data from the revenue department of the Bhomra Customs Station reveals that in July and August 2022, the port handled imports of 9,913 tons of corn, valued at 31 crore 70 lakh Taka.
However, during the corresponding period in 2023-24, a mere 335 tons of corn were imported, amounting to a value of 1 crore 31 lakh Taka. This stark decrease of 9,578 tons in corn imports can be attributed to a combination of factors, including a surge in the price of the dollar and a reduced supply of corn from India. Consequently, the shortage in corn supply has led to a sharp increase in prices in Satkhira’s wholesale and retail markets. Corn, which was priced at 24-25 Taka per kg just two months ago, now commands rates of 29-29.5 Taka per kg, resulting in a wholesale price surge of 160-200 Taka per maund (equivalent to 37.32 kg).
