The revision of export earnings for the first 10 months of the outgoing financial year in Bangladesh has resulted in a significant discrepancy, with nearly $14 billion disappearing from the reported figures. Over the past two years, this discrepancy totals approximately $23 billion. As a consequence, the country’s GDP could shrink by about 2%, equivalent to $9 billion.
This adjustment, based on Bangladesh Bank’s newly published data, reflects a more accurate portrayal of export earnings, contrasting sharply with inflated figures previously reported by EPB. The impact extends to per capita income, which is expected to decline alongside GDP. The recalibration underscores the critical role of accurate economic statistics in policy-making and economic planning, affecting sectors reliant on export data, notably textiles and non-apparel products.
