The government has approved an amendment proposal for the Barapukuria-Kaliakair 400KV line construction project to transmit Adani’s electricity from Jharkhand, India, to Bangladesh’s national grid. The newly-approved proposal costs Tk9,805 crore, a significant increase of 195% compared to the original estimate. The rise in expenditure is attributed to increased dollar prices, modern technology usage to cross the Jamuna River, CD VAT surge, and additional spending on material imports. The project, originally estimated at Tk3,322 crore in 2019, has faced multiple revisions, and its completion date has been extended to late 2025. India’s loan contribution has increased to Tk6,208 crore, with additional funds allocated from the Bangladesh government and PGCB. The Power Grid Company of Bangladesh is implementing the project, which has achieved 66.91% physical progress as of April 2023.
