The Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) has requested Bangladesh Bank to extend real-time gross settlement (RTGS) operations to a 24/7 basis to facilitate seamless online payments of customs duties and charges by port users. Currently, RTGS transactions are only available until 3:30 PM on working days, causing delays in vessel release and government revenue collection. CPA argues that continuous RTGS access would enhance efficiency, ensuring real-time income tax and VAT collection. The port handles 92% of Bangladesh’s total export-import trade, making uninterrupted payment processing crucial. Bangladesh Bank has acknowledged the request and is working on a solution.
