Crab exports from Bangladesh, which had slowed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, have shown a resurgence in terms of quantity. Over the last two fiscal years, around 7,500 tonnes of crabs were shipped annually to countries such as China, the main destination. Although export receipts dropped 26% YoY to $8.7 million in FY23, July of FY23 saw a 71% YoY surge in crab exports to $940,000. The revival follows Bangladesh’s compliance with Chinese import regulations after China suspended crab imports in June 2020 due to contamination concerns. With 14 exporters permitted by China and applications from 18 firms under review, Bangladesh’s crab farmers are seeing renewed interest and better prices, signaling a positive outlook for the industry’s recovery.
