Banking in Bangladesh is swiftly transitioning to Cash Recycling Machine (CRM) technology, which facilitates real-time deposits and withdrawals without needing to visit bank branches. The number of CRMs surged to 4,791 in April 2024 from 3,028 in April 2023, while ATMs decreased to 13,507 from 13,614 in the same period. Dutch-Bangla Bank PLC leads with 3,198 CRMs, a significant increase from 2,000 three months ago. City Bank PLC and BRAC Bank are also prioritizing CRM installations over ATMs due to their cost-effectiveness and comprehensive service offerings.
CRM transactions reached Tk 133.35 billion by April 2024, up from Tk 85.45 billion in April 2023, while ATM transactions fell to Tk 295.92 billion from Tk 345.0 billion. CRMs offer real-time balance updates and additional services like bKash withdrawals. City Bank plans to phase out ATMs completely, citing significant cost savings. BRAC Bank, with 55 CRMs, highlights the reduced need for frequent cash loading compared to ATMs. Although CRM use is increasing, ATM demand persists, especially in rural areas.
