Over the past decade, nearly 70% of Bangladesh banks’ $7.5 billion CSR spending was channeled to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund, shifting focus from social development to state-led initiatives like events and celebrations related to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Despite guidelines directing 30% of funds to education and health, compliance was poor, with only 17.65% spent on education in 2023, while “other sectors” absorbed 44.15%. Annual CSR allocations grew from Tk 527 crore in 2015 to Tk 1,143 crore in 2022, but transparency on fund usage remained limited. Recent leadership changes at BAB have redirected efforts toward community-focused initiatives.
