The Chattogram Customs House reported a 7.15% YoY increase in revenue collection during the first quarter of the current fiscal year, totaling Tk16,484.66 crore. The growth was attributed to rising import prices. Increased vigilance by the Audit Investigation and Research (AIR) unit of customs led to the identification of more cases of duty evasion and fraud, resulting in additional revenue and penalties.
The assessment value on various imported goods was also raised significantly in FY24, contributing to higher revenue. Customs authorities have intensified surveillance on imports and exports to prevent irregularities and fraud, identifying 700 companies involved in false declarations, money laundering, duty evasion, and unethical activities. The improved supply chain and higher international prices may have further boosted customs revenue.
