In the last six months, permission was granted to import 634,831 metric tons of onions, but only 927 tons were imported through Chittagong port. Despite being allowed, no onions are being imported by sea, causing prices to rise. Chittagong port imported only 4,446 metric tons in fiscal year 22-23. Currently, onions are selling for Tk 100-110 per kg, up from Tk 80-85 a month ago, with a Tk 15-20 increase in the last week. Buyers blame unscrupulous traders for the price hike, while sellers cite the lack of imports from India and spoilage due to rain. India’s onions, costing over Tk 100 per kg due to high duties, are not being imported. If monsoon conditions improve or tariffs are reduced, prices may stabilize. The country’s annual onion demand is 35-36 lakh tons, with 3.2 million tons produced domestically last year, and 8-10 million tons typically imported.
