The Chattogram Port has witnessed a surge in container and cargo handling despite a decrease in ship arrivals. In the first nine months of the fiscal year 2023-2024, 3,001 commercial ships docked at the port, 7.12% fewer than the previous year. However, container handling increased by 7.64%, and cargo handling rose by 4.20%. Enhanced navigation facilities and the arrival of larger vessels have facilitated this growth. The port’s decision to allow docking of ships up to 200 meters in length and with a draft of 10 meters since January 2023 has significantly increased its capabilities. Larger vessels now carry more containers, leading to reduced freight charges. As a result, cargo delivery time and costs have decreased, positively impacting the port’s revenue.
