In Abhaynagar Upazila of Jessore, cucumber cultivation is flourishing, with an impressive increase in cultivation area and production in 2023. According to data from the Upazila Agriculture Extension Department, cucumber has been cultivated across 298 hectares of land during the current season, marking a fourfold growth compared to the previous year. The ambitious production target for this season stands at 5360 metric tons.
Farmers in the region are reaping the benefits of this trend. Cucumber plants, which begin fruiting within 40 to 45 days of sowing, offer a quick turnaround for farmers. Abhaynagar Upazila’s Agriculture Department provides essential training and technical support to farmers to maximize their yields. Sesame is not only a profitable crop but also a highly nutritious food source, making it a valuable asset to the local agricultural economy, especially in regions like Ghera Island with abundant land resources.
