Business leaders, freedom fighters, and cultural alliances in Rajshahi are protesting the merger of Rajshahi Agricultural Development Bank (RAKAB) with Bangladesh Krishi Bank (BKB). They argue that RAKAB’s regional focus on agriculture development in Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions would be compromised if merged. Memorandums have been submitted to various authorities, urging cancellation of the merger decision. Critics fear that merging RAKAB with the financially weaker BKB would negate any potential benefits. They highlight RAKAB’s operational profitability and its superior financial and administrative performance compared to BKB. RAKAB, established in 1987, serves agricultural sectors in 16 districts and reinvests all deposits locally. There are concerns that centralizing banking operations in Dhaka would hinder agricultural loan activities in the region. The potential loss of 508 head office positions in Rajshahi post-merger adds to apprehensions. Opponents threaten strikes and disruptions in food supply if their demands are not met.
