In efforts to alleviate consumer burden during Ramadan, the government reduced VAT and import duties on four key commodities. However, this hasn’t reflected in market prices yet. In Chattogram’s Khatunganj, sugar prices rose by Tk50 per maund to Tk4,950-5,000, and palm oil increased by Tk100 to Tk4,950. Dates and other edible oils remained steady. In Dhaka’s Karwan Bazar, date prices surged by Tk300-500 per carton, now ranging from Tk2,700 to Tk6,000. Wholesalers attribute these hikes to increased import costs and demurrage charges. Despite duty reductions, prices of sugar, palm oil, and dates have risen due to various factors including a shortage of US dollars affecting LC openings. Consumers feel the benefits of duty cuts aren’t reaching them, with market manipulation cited as a concern. Prices soaring beyond affordability exacerbate the situation for ordinary people.
