The Dhaka Metro rail is expected to gain 1.0 million passengers daily following an eight-kilometre extension to Tongi, according to a study under the MRT-06 project. This expansion is projected to add 500,000 more daily passengers, with Gazipur as a key commuter zone. Currently, MRT-06 handles 300,000 passengers per day, with a peak of 365,000. The extension will include five stations and cost an estimated $250 million, with completion expected in five years. The metro service will start operating on Fridays from September 20, running from 3:30 pm to 9:40 pm. Additionally, Kazipara station is set to reopen by September 20 after being closed due to vandalism, with repair costs expected to be below Tk 300 crore. Mirpur-10 station, also damaged, will take a few more months to reopen. The metro line, initially developed from Uttara to Motijheel, is being extended to Kamalapur, with completion expected next year.
