The kerb market is grappling with a dollar crisis, with the exchange rate reaching Tk 120-121 per US dollar from Tk 112 within a month. Bangladesh Bank and law enforcement recently raided money changers and demanded the previous rate of Tk 113.30 per dollar, exacerbating the situation.
Now, individuals are selling dollars through their networks at Tk 120-121 per dollar, making them the primary source for those needing dollars for various purposes such as medical treatment and education abroad. Many money changers and the kerb market are idle due to the dollar supply crisis.
The shortage of US dollars in Bangladesh is causing the price of foreign currency to rise uncontrollably, further devaluing the taka. The Money Changers Association of Bangladesh noted that money changers are unable to obtain dollars at the rate set by the central bank, leading to empty-handed traders.
