The surge in dollar prices, coupled with high import tariffs in Bangladesh’s current budget, has led to a doubling of fruit prices compared to pre-Ukraine war or pandemic times. In Dhaka’s retail markets, apples now cost between Tk300 and Tk320 per kilogram, up from almost half the price. Importers face duties of Tk90-Tk100 per kilogram on fruits like apples and oranges, purchased for Tk50.
Wholesalers buy these fruits for Tk170-Tk190, further increasing to Tk300 or more at the retail level. The heavy duties imposed by the government, essentially twice the import cost, are cited as the primary reason for significant price hikes. Traders note decreased sales due to high prices, impacting consumer purchasing behavior. Additionally, the import duty on dates has surged from 10% to 53%, raising concerns about increased costs and potential strain on consumers and traders.
