Dr. Khawza Iftekhar Uddin Ahmed has been appointed as the new Pro-Vice Chancellor of the Green University of Bangladesh (GUB). Dr. Ahmed began his career as a lecturer at Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology and later served as an Assistant Professor at American International University, Bangladesh. He holds a BSc and MSc in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) and earned his PhD in Electrical Engineering from Arizona State University in 2005. His appointment aims to bring valuable expertise and leadership to GUB’s academic endeavors

The government has proposed a 7.42 percent increase in education sector allocation to Tk94,710 crore for the upcoming fiscal year. This amount constitutes 11.88 percent of the total budget and 1.69 percent of GDP. Finance Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali designated Tk44,108 crore for secondary and higher education, Tk10,602 crore for technical and madrasa education, and Tk38,819 crore for primary and mass education.

Education Sector Receives Lowest GDP Allocation in 16 Years

The proposed allocation for the education sector in the current fiscal year falls significantly short of expectations, constituting only 1.69 percent of GDP, the lowest in 16 years. This allocation is well below UNESCO's recommended range of four to six percent of GDP for the sector. Countries like Nepal and Myanmar outpace Bangladesh in education spending, with Nepal allocating 3.6 percent and Myanmar 2.1 percent of GDP in 2022.
