Businesses obtained duty exemptions totaling Tk61,032 crore in FY2022-23 under the premise of reducing domestic market prices, as per the latest data from the National Board of Revenue (NBR). However, consumer rights organizations assert that traders capitalized on duty exemptions by selling goods at higher prices, leading to substantial profits. Duty exemptions increased by Tk9,152 crore (17.64%) compared to the previous year, totaling Tk51,880 crore. Stakeholders expressed concerns that these exemptions, aimed at curbing inflation and safeguarding local businesses, have not had a significant positive impact. The exemptions span various sectors, including capital equipment, edible oil, raw materials, mobile manufacturing, defense stores, power grid, and nuclear power projects.
