The e-Commerce Association of Bangladesh (e-CAB) reported substantial financial losses in the e-commerce sector due to the recent internet and Facebook shutdown. Over 13 days, the sector lost more than Tk 17 billion, with Tk 14 billion lost in the first 10 days. The primary e-commerce sector lost Tk 6 billion, e-tourism Tk 3 billion, and e-logistics Tk 1 billion. Small- and medium-sized entrepreneurs, heavily reliant on Facebook, are facing severe crises, including business closures and salary payment struggles. e-CAB recommended measures such as low-interest, collateral-free loans, a six-month grace period for loan repayments, and waivers on VAT for advertisements and license renewal fees. They also requested the extension of loan repayment deadlines, VAT waivers on logistics and digital marketing, and engagement with Facebook for refunds or re-advertisements. Despite the restoration of internet and Facebook access, issues like slow internet and intermittent Facebook closures continue to hamper 95% of e-commerce transactions. e-CAB is conducting a survey to assess the full extent of the damage and is seeking ongoing government support to address the crisis.
