Eastern Bank PLC (EBL) achieved significant recognition at the Visa Leadership Conclave, themed “Towards a Cashless, Smart Bangladesh 2023,” held at Dhaka’s Sheraton Hotel. EBL received four Visa Excellence Awards in various categories. These awards were presented to EBL for their outstanding performance in E-commerce Acquiring, Cybersource-Payment Gateway, Co-brand Cards, and Cross-Border Payments.

The Managing Director and CEO of EBL, accepted the awards from Planning Minister, during the ceremony.  The award ceremony was attended by notable figures, including, the director of the Payment System Department at Bangladesh Bank, and the Visa Country Manager for Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan. EBL’s senior executives, including DMD, and Head of Retail and SME Banking, the Head of Digital Financial Services, and the Head of Cards, were also present at the event. This recognition signifies EBL’s exceptional contributions to the evolving financial landscape in Bangladesh and its commitment to delivering top-notch banking and financial services to its customers.

Agent banking is gaining popularity in Bangladesh, with 86.14% of customers residing in rural areas, as per the latest Bangladesh Bank report. The total agent banking accounts reached 20.68 million by the end of September 2023, and the majority, 86.14%, belonged to villagers.

BB Directs Banks to Share Default Loan Information

The Bangladesh Bank has instructed banks to provide details on defaulted loans of candidates contesting the upcoming national elections to the Election Commission. The national polls are scheduled for January 7, and the Financial Institutions Division of the Finance Ministry issued a circular on November 28, which the central bank forwarded to banks.

Banks Struggle with Tk 3,000 Crore Bankruptcy Cases

In Bangladesh, 61 individuals declared bankrupt in the last decade, owing a combined Tk3,000 crore to banks, managed to obtain stays on their judgments from the Supreme Court. Despite the Bankruptcy Act of 1997 overseeing around 800 cases in bankruptcy courts, loopholes in the law allow defaulters to seek High Court stays, hindering legal actions for debt recovery.
