Egg Imports Delayed Due to Documentation Issues

Industry: Commodity

The import of eggs into Bangladesh faces delays due to the prolonged acquisition of negative avian influenza certification. Of the 15 companies permitted to import 15 crore eggs to alleviate rising prices, only a few have secured the necessary paperwork. Import policy mandates certification from avian influenza-free countries, causing challenges for companies.

Commerce Secretary suggests temporary relaxation of conditions to expedite the process. Tiger Trading, a permitted company, took 18 days for paperwork, including a week for avian influenza certification from India. The commerce minister’s announcement on September 12 did not promptly affect the market. Despite fixed prices at Tk 12, a dozen eggs now sell for Tk 155-160, attributing increases to global poultry feed costs. Fiscal 2022-23 records 2,337.63 crores of eggs produced against a demand of 1,806.48 crores. Poultry feed comprises 70% of production costs among 290 registered and 100 unregistered feed mills.
