Egypt seeks to enhance trade relations with Bangladesh by suggesting the import of petrochemicals and fertilizers. During a recent meeting with the president of the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI), the Egyptian ambassador noted that despite 50 years of diplomatic ties, bilateral trade was only $180.55 million in FY 2022-23.
He highlighted that an Egyptian company is already successfully operating in Bangladesh’s telecommunications sector and encouraged Bangladeshi entrepreneurs to explore opportunities in Egypt’s pharmaceutical market, especially for cancer treatment drugs. The ambassador also proposed using Egyptian ports as a transshipment hub for exports to Europe and other regions.
The DCCI president welcomed these initiatives, emphasizing Bangladesh’s potential for exporting frozen foods, shrimp, mangoes, and products from IT, leather, garments, ceramics, and pharmaceuticals. He also suggested increased Egyptian investment in Bangladesh’s economic zones and more frequent sector-specific business conferences.
