From 2001 to 2009, electricity prices in the country increased four times, rising by 16% for consumer levels (100 to 400 units). Since the Awami League government took power in 2009, prices surged by 188% by August 2024, with 14 price hikes over the past 15 years. During this period, electricity capacity increased by 26,578 MW, and 125 new power plants were built, with $15 billion invested in the sector. Another $24 billion is planned for 2021-2030. Despite these investments, prices have continually risen, impacting manufacturing costs and quality of life. In 2023, electricity prices were raised four times, including two 5% increases in January and another 5% in February. The IMF’s loan conditions required phasing out power sector subsidies, leading to announced annual price hikes. Before 2009, the BNP and caretaker governments also raised electricity prices, with increases from Tk 2.15 to Tk 2.50 per 100 units and Tk 3.30 to Tk 3.00 per unit for higher consumption.
