On November 20, 2024, the Energy and Mineral Resources Division requested the Planning Ministry to exempt five crucial gas exploration and development projects from the mandatory third-party feasibility study requirement. The government argues that this move would expedite gas exploration, reducing reliance on imported liquefied natural gas (LNG). The five projects, set for completion by fiscal year 2028-29, aim to drill 13 wells at key locations such as Begumganj and Titas Gas Field.
The Energy Division highlights challenges with existing feasibility study guidelines, citing a lack of expertise and delays in executing these studies, which can cost up to Tk 4 million and take 6-12 months. Experts have supported the move but cautioned that proper precautionary measures must be taken. The division urges the exemption to ensure timely project implementation, vital for strengthening energy security and reducing costly LNG imports.
