The World Bank has initiated a railway ecosystem assessment under the Cross-Border Rail Connectivity Project in Eastern South Asia, covering Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, and Nepal (BBIN). Bangladesh is expected to benefit significantly from improved rail transit in the sub-region, enhancing trade connections, particularly with China.

Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu LLC has been appointed by the World Bank to conduct the study, focusing on the assessment of current rail infrastructure, rolling stock, legal and regulatory frameworks, and institutional coordination. The initiative aims to create a roadmap for cross-border rail services, fostering trade facilitation and connectivity in the BBIN region, with potential future links to China.
