The formation of a Minimum Wage Board (MWB) for workers in Bangladesh’s Export Processing Zones (EPZs) and Economic Zones (EZs) has been announced amid ongoing disputes between the government and garment workers over minimum wage issues. The eleven-member board, consisting of representatives from the Bangladesh Export Processing Zone Authority (BEPZA) and Workers’ Welfare Associations (WWA), will determine the minimum wage for EPZ and EZ employees. The last MWB for EPZ workers was established in 2013, setting the minimum monthly wage at Tk 5,600. In 2018, BEPZA increased it to Tk 8,200. With approximately 520,000 workers in EPZs, constituting 66% women, the move is significant as EPZ exports reached $8.5 billion in the fiscal year 2021-2022, with 54% attributed to the garment sector.
