The Economic Reporters’ Forum (ERF) has demanded unrestricted access for financial journalists to the Bangladesh Bank (BB) headquarters. During a meeting with the BB Governor, the ERF urged for hassle-free entry for professional purposes. However, the BB spokesperson announced that journalists would only be allowed to visit the spokesperson for the BB at the headquarters with a specific permit issued by the bank. The central bank’s decision came amid talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) regarding a $4.7-billion loan package for Bangladesh. Despite the ERF’s demand, the governor refused to withdraw the restrictions, but stated that the issue might be reconsidered after conducting workshops in partnership with the ERF on bank mergers and acquisitions. Journalists protested against the restrictions outside the governor’s office.
