In Dhaka, the prices of essential commodities have persisted at elevated levels, creating economic strain for consumers. Over time, the price of potatoes has surged by 22.37%, and locally produced onions have witnessed a staggering increase of 76.47%. Despite government efforts to curb this inflation, including setting price limits on eggs, potatoes, and onions, the retail market continues to see prices well above the established rates, with eggs selling for Tk 13 each, potatoes at Tk 45-50 per kilogram, and onions at Tk 70-80 per kilogram.
While the commerce ministry has taken measures to reduce the cost of edible oil by up to Tk 5 per liter, the impact on consumers remains uncertain. Furthermore, the high prices extend beyond basic foodstuffs, with vegetables like aubergine, papaya, and tomatoes priced significantly above normal rates. Imported garlic is selling for Tk 230–240 per kilogram, far beyond the estimated reasonable price of Tk 92 per kilogram. Even ginger, both local and imported, is significantly overpriced.
