Prices of essential food items in Bangladesh, including chicken, onion, green chilli, and potato, have surged by Tk 10 to Tk 40 per kilogram within the past few days, continually breaking records each week. This unprecedented increase is attributed to low production and supply chain disruptions, conflicting with government-set price caps.
Broiler chicken prices rose by Tk 10-15 per kilogram, reaching Tk 195-210 per kilogram in Dhaka. Local onions were sold at Tk 85-95 per kilogram, with the Indian variety at Tk 70-80 per kilogram, both seeing a Tk 10 increase. Green chillies experienced a drastic Tk 40 per kilogram surge within two days, reaching Tk 240-280 per kilogram.
Stored white potatoes were sold at Tk 48-55 per kilogram, exceeding the government-set maximum of Tk 36 per kilogram. Consumer rights advocates call for stringent market monitoring and penalties against profiteering.
