About four and a half months before a student-led mass uprising overthrew Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the energy ministry issued an order allowing United Power to make excessive profits. The order, dated March 25, 2024, allowed United Power’s two plants to receive gas at the independent power plant (IPP) rate, against a Supreme Court order. This guaranteed United Power an additional profit of Tk 4.61 per kWh. The tariff for electricity generated at the IPP rate is Tk 6.41 per unit, while United Power’s contract with BEPZA allows them to charge Tk 11.03 per unit. The energy ministry’s order is seen as benefiting cronies of the past government. United Power’s dues to Titas Gas rose to Tk 486 crore by October 2024. The company earned Tk 3,799 crore from electricity sales between 2017-18 and 2023-24, enjoying a monopoly in the export processing zone. The interim government has since canceled the indemnity law allowing such deals.
