A significant $7 billion discrepancy in Bangladesh’s export earnings for the fiscal year 2022-23 has alarmed authorities. The Ministry of Commerce’s initial data analysis identified 14 factors contributing to this anomaly, including issues with Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) statistical methodology, customs statistics, and bill of lading. The discrepancy stems primarily from unreturned sample exports and delays in converting $2 billion into local currency. Exporters cite reasons like delayed payments, price reductions, and product suspensions for the missing earnings. The EPB reported exports worth $55.55 billion, while the Central Bank’s data shows $46.31 billion, highlighting a $9.24 billion difference. A detailed investigation is expected to take three more months.
