Bangladesh is experiencing a significant deficit in export earnings, with a discrepancy of $14.5 billion reported over the first 9 months of the current fiscal year. According to data from the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) and Bangladesh Bank, the country’s export earnings were reported at $43.55 billion by EPB, whereas Bangladesh Bank recorded only $28.97 billion during the same period. This disparity, if converted at an exchange rate of 110 taka per dollar, amounts to approximately 1 lakh 60 thousand 380 crore taka.
The ready-made garment sector, a cornerstone of Bangladesh’s export economy, saw the largest difference, with EPB reporting $37.20 billion and Bangladesh Bank reporting $24.74 billion in export earnings. This gap of $12.46 billion underscores the challenges in the sector, with $7.39 billion from net garments and $4.99 billion from other garment exports not reaching the country. This trend of lower than reported export earnings has been increasing since the fiscal year 2021-22, exacerbated by global economic downturns and delays in customer payments.
