In Fiscal Year 2023, Bangladesh’s trade with South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) countries, including imports and exports, has witnessed a decline, as per a recent Bangladesh Bank report. Export earnings from Saarc countries dropped from $1.93 billion in FY22 to $1.91 billion in FY23, marking nearly a 1% decrease. Saarc countries, comprising Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, accounted for 3.44% of Bangladesh’s total exports, with Europe and the United States serving as major export destinations.
On the import side, Saarc countries contributed only 15% to Bangladesh’s total import payments, which declined significantly from $14.93 billion in FY22 to $10.34 billion in FY23, a 31% decrease. This decline in imports from Saarc countries outpaced the overall reduction in imports, which was 15.76% due to central bank restrictions aimed at managing a dollar shortage. Despite Bangladesh’s overall export growth of 6.28% to $55.55 billion in FY23, trade with Saarc nations has underperformed, highlighting challenges in regional trade dynamics
