In the Jashore district, the cultivation of Pabda fish has gained significant traction, with 50 fish farmers actively engaged in its production. Farmers successfully raised 9,000 Pabda fingerlings in a pond, resulting in a substantial profit of 800,000 Bangladeshi Taka ($9,250 USD) in the FY 2022-2023. The Pabda fish has witnessed a surge in demand in India, leading to the creation of a new market for Bangladeshi Pabda.
During the first two months of the 2023-24 fiscal year, 98% of fish exported to India through the Benapole Land Port were Pabda. Valued at 10,225,750 USD, or nearly 3 billion Bangladeshi Taka. In the previous fiscal year, Bangladesh exported a total of 6,976,199 kilograms of fish, including Pabda, amounting to 207,213,000 USD, or approximately 30 billion Bangladeshi Taka, with Pabda constituting 69% of the exports.
